HEMYCA’s studio is based in London, down Elizabeth Street which is just off of Sloan Square. I have decided to start my placement early (the middle of August) to potentially extend my 3 month stay in order to get a real feel for the company and to actually become part of the design team. HEMYCA is an emerging British Design Label that creates truly beautiful garments through exceptional tailoring, and i hope to work closely with Helen Clinch and Mira Nigris, the creators and owners of the brand. As well as them I hope to work with, and become part of a close team. While i am there i will be working on patterns, constructing garments, fabric sourcing and what ever Helen and Myra need me to do to help with their brand.

Decisions decisions...

I was extremely lucky when applying for my placement because i was given the opportunty to work for two amazing brands. Firstly i was offered a chance to go and work for the fashion knitwear brand, Alice Lee. I worked there for a week and while i was there i helped create their beautiful spring/summer 2012 collection.
(Here is the link to show the collection and some of the garments i worked on: http://www.vogue.co.uk/fashion/spring-summer-2012/ready-to-wear/alice-lee#/image/10)

At the end of the week i went for an interview/trial day at another brand, HEMYCA. While i was there i was given a design and had to produce the pattern and toile. Initially I went to go to gain the interview experience and to compare the working environtment to Alice Lee, but i loved eveything i did that day that i have decided to accept the placement with HEMYCA.

I made the decision of the two purely based on which company i though i would benefit from the most, and i believe i have made the right decision.

For this extended industry unit I have decided to do a placement because I believe that it is very important for students to have done at least one placement before they graduate to understand the realities of the fashion industry.

From my placement I hope to gain a thorough understanding of what is expected of me within the role of design, pattern cutting and construction, for when I graduate and start applying for jobs. I also intend on increasing my knowledge of said subjects and hope to highly improve my skills by being in a working environment. I believe you can learn more from other people’s knowledge and previous experiences and therefore I will ask as many questions as possible and take on board all the advice given to me.
